Our April guest designer ...

Please welcome our guest designer this month, Brenda Caldow with her wonderful interpretation of our artwork.

My inspiration from the Josh Miels painting - We Will Remember is that it was an army picture and when I looked at it I was drawn to the red in the face which pulled at my heart. Because of this I used red on my page in the background (Stamp) and the title. I also chose to use neutral colours of that period.

I'm a mum with two lovely boys that are my world and who manage to keep my life very busy and happy. We live in country Victoria, Australia and run a beef cattle farm. I also drive buses but mainly now just for our local primary school. Scrapping, card making and Beyond The Page are my passion and my boys, family and friends are my inspiration. Every spare minute I have is spent at my craft desk and there are days I wish I could be at it longer.

You still have time until the end of the month to upload your own take on this challenge.  All details are on the blog sidebar. We'd love to see what you can do with our inspiration this month.

Let's get inspired again ...

Welcome to our mid month reveal. We are working with this amazing artwork by Josh Miels called We will remember them.

CRITERIA -  The use of Typography on your page - let those letters shine!

MARY
I found this photo amongst my Mums photos . On investigation , with help from a cousin & Aunt I found out who he was . His father & my Dads Grandmother were Brother & Sister . So I thought I would like to Document it & honour him , so My children & their children are not left wondering who this man is.

TONE
I was inspired by all the letters ...

KAREN
My inspiration are the colours and Anzac Day. I used a stencil for my background and patterned paper. I am using a very old postcard which I stumbled across in my photos of my grandparents.

ANNA
I was inspired of the BIG letters but I made them white. It also inspired me to go for a b/w photo of my father as a young boy with is mates at work. This page is a tribute to him and a great memory after him for me. (He passed away more than four years ago♡) I also have those pops of blue and orange-red.

KAT
For this challenge I was inspired by the portrait of a man and the Anzac theme to create a layout about my Grandad, whose birthday was on Anzac Day and who served in the Army Reserves for many years. I used a photo and papers that matched the colours in the artwork and added typography using text paper, an alphabet stencil and texture paste and some letter tile stickers for the title.

ANGELIKA
I was inspired by the horizontal lines of text and I brought grey elements into my embellishments.

JANE
I used the military theme, the colours and a slightly different way of using words (typography) on my page.

Now it is your turn, we'd love to see your own interpretation ...

Remember we happily accept all forms of paper crafting for your entry including digital and encourage international submissions.  All we ask is that you create something new for our challenge and only combine your entry with a sketch challenge.  We offer two prizes determined by team vote and one other prize selected purely by random draw - so anyone can be a winner regardless of style or level of experience.  You have until 11.55pm on the last day of the month to submit your entry.

March winners and our April 3T's ...

I will be announcing our March winners shortly but first I would like to introduce you to our April edition of Tips, Tricks and Techniques brought to you by team member Helene Bogren.

Using micro and glass beads by Helene Bogren

I guess many of you are familiar with micro beads and glass beads. If there are some of you who have not really found a way to use them yet, or if you think it is not your style, I will try to give you some inspiration. What I will do is to show you some different ways to use them as a complement, without letting them take over the design.

You can use them to frame the photo:

To highlight embellishments:

To highlight a pattern on a patterned paper:

To highlight a stamped motive:

Or just to get an effect on your page. On this layout I wanted it to look a bit like snow.

I only use beads in small areas and they are very easy to apply, but I still think it makes a big difference to the layout.

If you want to see the layouts in their entirety you will find them on my blog at:

Welcome to April ...

We hope you all had a wonderful Easter and are now ready for another challenge here on ARTastic. This month we feature an ANZAC tribute artwork by the ever amazing Josh Miels called We will remember them.

CRITERIA -  The use of Typography on your page - let those letters shine!

Study of the design of typefaces and the way in which the type is laid out on a page to best achieve the desired visual effect and to best convey the meaning of the reading matter.

ANZAC Day is our memorial day where we remember those who gave their lives in wartime. Your page doesn't have to be about this topic of course - you can use anything that inspires you from the artwork - the monochromatic colours, the use of a larger portrait, the masculine feel of this work etc. With the Typography aspect I just mean to use words/letters in such a way they are a focal point on your page - this can be with patterned paper or the use of an alphabet in your title or on your page somehow. It can simply be the significant use of journaling.

A little about Josh Miels ...

Joshua Miels is a contemporary portrait artist who looks to capture the vulnerability of people and the emotions that people try to hide from others. Spending countless hours adding layer upon layer of paint Joshua produces artworks that are not only striking, but deep and powerful. Painted predominantly with oil paint, each piece begins with a subject, but with a large amount of experimentation, each art piece takes on its own journey from start to finish. The pieces challenge viewers to draw upon their own emotions and personal experiences.

And now some inspiration from the first of our team ...

HELENE
I used patterned papers, stamps and templates to meet the typography criteria.

TRACEY
I was influenced by the washed out alpha's in the background.

SUE
I was inspired by the grungy feel and dark brown colours and the white background text.

LIZZY
Inspiration: created a bg similar to this picture with black, then white gesso over cut out letters. Also for typography used a Motex writer & the large title alphas.

AN'JENIC
Inspired to recreate the falling background using the stencil and a layout featuring a guy. So I used this one of my nephew.

MARIA
My inspiration - my family. In the photo, my great-grandfather. And he is a soldier of the Red Army. This is our story. I also used the stamps, stencils, book pages.

ELAINE
I used a pattern paper background and did some stencilling around my photo. For the inspiration, I used a portrait photo and used the monochromatic colouring like the painting.
